Presiding Member
My wife Tanya and I have lived in Grey Lynn for over seven years and we love this community. As a father of three boys, one of whom is at Grey Lynn School, I feel privileged to be a member of the board as the school transitions into this exciting and innovative new phase. With a background in finance and strategy, I believe that a quality education is a key component to a positive future and I have a strong desire to see children succeed. I look forward to making a positive contribution to the school.
As the lead educational learner at Te Rae o Kawharu | Grey Lynn School, I value working alongside our Grey Lynn community and committed staff; to serve our students. The Board of Trustees role is to design the future of our school through developing, monitoring and reviewing our plans and developing our policies which guide our school. As the Principal, I am responsible for the management of our school which is essentially the design of the key strategies and the 'how' we get to our future plans. I am fortunate to work alongside talented and diverse Board members with a variety of skill sets and perspectives. The one focus which remains central to all we do; is our students and our vision that together we are all 'Learning today to shape tomorrow'.

I was born in Belfast and moved to Canada when I was 2 and emigrated to New Zealand in 1997 and have been here ever since.
My heart has 4 homes, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and Grey Lynn. I chose to work at Grey Lynn School as it was my own children's primary school, as well as it having significance in our longer Fale family history. I love the diversity of learners our community offers and champion students in creating a safe place to be themselves, share their culture and learn collaboratively.
I look forward to working with the Board and sharing staff perspective to board discussion and learn more about school governance.
Emma and I are parents to two boys, Jacob and Samuel. We are proud residents of Grey Lynn and love the area and what it has to offer. We enjoy seeing many of the GLS community at the park. Both Emma and I are practicing lawyers and we use those skills to make a meaningful contribution to the school and its Board. Since joining the Board, I am proud of the efforts the teachers have made to improve comprehension across the board with reading, writing and general learning. I am always open to receiving feedback both negative and positive so don’t be afraid to reach out to me. We cannot help your children if we don’t know the issues that we are facing.
My husband Ashley and I have had three boys and our family business is just down the road. We absolutely love the area, people and community this suburb has to offer. I have an arts background and I remain an advocate for the importance of rich arts programs in all schools at all ages. I firmly believe that these programs help cultivate the type of leaders and thinkers our world needs. I’m passionate about public schools; the sense of belonging they cultivate in a community and the role they have in supporting our young people. I’m excited to be part of the board this year and look forward to contributing to the Grey Lynn School.
Kia ora. My name is Helen. Nō Rereahu au. I’m a co-parenting mum of three. My youngest attends Grey Lynn. I have experience as a youthworker from Youthtown in Nelson St, and as a basketball referee. My family are long-time Grey Lynn residents. I currently work as a Captions Producer making closed captions for the hard of hearing. I have a background in performance and TV Production processes. I spent my pre-children life as a TV Presenter and Vocalist. I have a Diploma in Te Reo Māori and a Certificate in Iwi Environmental Management. As a Board member, I would bring my range of experience with urban Māori and Pasifika children, I will bring my love of community life in Grey Lynn, and my perspective as a parent of one child who excels in learning, and another who has a disability, and their varying education needs. Ngā mihi nui.
I am mum to Thomas (8) and step-mum to Mason (7) who are both at Grey Lynn school. I have loved being part of the Grey Lynn School community since Thomas started there in 2022 and have been actively involved in school events and fundraisers. I am passionate about education and the role schools play in setting our children up for their future. Grey Lynn School is very fortunate in its wonderful teachers who create such a positive environment for our children. I look forward to being part of this and working with the other board members to support our teachers. Professionally, I work as a finance lawyer and am on my firm’s board so will bring this experience to the Board.
My wife Amber and I have 3 children, Evie (Year 2 at GLS), Flynn (age 4) and Harvey (age 3) as well as Broccoli (the dog). We moved to Grey Lynn in 2022 and could not be happier with our experience at GLS to date – with Flynn starting at GLS at the end of 2025. My professional background is in the construction and property industry, establishing a construction company in 2016. Over the past 9 years, we have grown the group to 60 staff and to be an all-encompassing property group, from Construction and Development to Maintenance, with a focus on Education and Retirement projects. I have worked on over 30 school new builds and refurbishments in the Auckland area. My interest in joining the GLS board came from my late father, who was on the board when I was at school at both Marist Primary and St Peter’s College. The ability he was able to have to help shape the schools for the better was not lost on me and I hope to use my learnings both professionally and as a father to do this too.
Grey Lynn School has five parent representatives on the Board and holds split term elections. This means that three of its parent representatives are elected in a triennial election year, and the remaining two at a mid-term election 18 months later.
The board of trustees parent representative is elected by parents and caregivers. Any community member is eligible to stand if nominated by a parent or caregiver. The staff elects their own trustee and the Principal is a member of the Board by right. Other trustees may be co-opted onto the Board. The Chairperson is elected annually.
