History
Grey Lynn School was established as an addition to Newton Central Primary School. Classes were held in Richmond Hall Located in Francis Street. In 1908, the current site was located and on 8 June 1910 the Honourable George Fowlds, Minister of Education, laid the foundation stone for the school. The main block was opened on 11 February 1911 and the infant and junior blocks were added later.
In the late 1970s a decision was made to demolish the old concrete buildings due to their earthquake risk. On 9 September 1981, the children moved into their new classrooms. One five year old commented, “The old building was old and too cold. This one is the very best in the school.”
The hibiscus trees planted along the fence of the swimming pool reflected in the letterhead of the school, were planted to highlight the Polynesian connections that the school has within the Grey Lynn Community.
The Living Heritage Website
The Living Heritage Website is where young people celebrate New Zealand's heritage and taonga. With our support, schools can present their own web pages about their local community, whānau and friends. Please click on the link above to read about Grey Lynn School.
